School Sports Premium Funding

The school has been in receipt of Sports Premium Funding since September 2013. All Primary schools receive a fixed sum of £800, plus £5 for every child. Schools are free to spend the Sports Premium as they see fit as they are best placed to identify need.

However, the Sport Premium must be spent on physical education and school sport.

PE and Sport Premium Funding 2016-2017

PE and physical activity continues to be high profile at Hinde House Primary and with the PE and Sport Premium funding we have been able to further develop our PE curriculum and wider approach to physical activity. Evidence of this is detailed below.

Champions PE Curriculum– 2016-17 saw the introduction of a new PE curriculum to compliment iMoves dance which continues to be very popular and effective - I’ve never seen so many smiles during a dance lesson! Champions has proved to be a positive change with staff liking the clear lesson plan format and children enjoying the very active lessons. Additional resources were purchased to support the curriculum.

HHK – The HHK? What is the HHK? It’s the Hinde House Kilometre, our version of the Daily Mile - we thought metric would be more appropriate than imperial measurements! As a school the aim is to complete the HHK daily using either the playground or the Brickworks field. Children can leave their classroom, run 1km and be back working within 15 minutes, feeling reenergized and more focused. A competition element was introduced this year. The class who completes the most HHKs over a half term can win £100! The prize money has to be spent on something to support the children moving more.

Surf’s up – Surfing has arrived at Hinde House! We used some of the funding to introduce a new sport to Hinde House – waveboarding, described as a mix of surfing and snowboarding. With only two wheels, one at the front and one at the back, it is far harder than skateboarding! The first twenty minutes of the lesson puts some of our Core Values to the test – perseverance for example! By lesson two you can be surfing around the playground!

Half termly House Competitions see children competing in tug of war, cross country running, cyclocross cycle races and the annual sports day. All of these events have been supported by the funding.

Unique to Hinde House is our Beyond The Four Walls curriculum. This is where children get the chance to discover and explore their local environment. Year 1 and 2 can be seen on Wincobank Hill looking for dangerous animals and visiting the dinosaur park. In Year 3 and 4 we travel further, looking for evidence of the Bronze Age in Ecclesall Woods and by Year 5 and 6 we’re on a train heading in to the Peak National Park.

Before and after school clubs continue to increase thanks to the funding. Around 100 children per week take part in a range of after school clubs. They include: dance, rugby, football, gymnastics, cycling, waveboards, running, basketball, cricket and athletics. Keen cyclists can also come along for a pre-school ride on a Wednesday morning at 8am!

Through our links with the Arches School Sports Partnership children have been able to take part in a number of festivals and competitions throughout the year. These include: sports hall athletics, volleyball, basketball and bouldering. Bouldering proved to be very popular, we hope to compete again next year and try to fit in some training beforehand.

The funding has allowed the PE subject leader to work alongside staff to support them in the delivery of high quality PE lessons. This process enables all teachers to have the necessary skills and knowledge to feel confident when delivering high quality PE lessons.

Additional CPD was accessed through the Arches, Yorkshire Cricket Board and Ruggereds. It was great to see children playing tag rugby, a new sport for Hinde House. Cricket proved to be very popular and will be offered once again this year. We also look forward to hosting the Arches Gymnastics CPD, giving us the opportunity to showcase our fantastic facilities.

ICT in PE has often been overlooked but with the recent purchase of some iPads we are all set for slow-motion replays to analyse techniques in gymnastics, throwing skills and maybe even goal-line technology! Children being able to view their own technique will help make them more aware of their own areas for improvements.

To support the Sheffield wide and nationwide approach to Moving More we have purchased an online subscription for 5-A-Day-TV. This is ‘the ultimate fun fitness resource for primary schools’. Give it a go if you fancy a fun approach to getting fit, in 5 minutes!

Foundation Stage have benefited from some new resources tailored to them, both physical resources and a new curriculum. Walk past Foundation Stage in the next few weeks and you’ll see children learning to ride, on balance bikes. This supports our whole school approach to every child having the opportunity to learn to ride.

The funding enabled us to purchase some team kit so that we look the part when competing! It will hopefully get even more use next year!
