Sex and Relationship Education (SRE)

Since September 2014, SRE is compulsory from Year 7 onwards and is no longer a requirement in Primary schools

However, we believe that an introduction to SRE in the Primary school lays the foundation for factual knowledge and the more explicit information required by young people in later years. It prepares children for the changes at puberty - physically, emotionally and socially. It helps develop the child’s skills in being able to apply information, and creates opportunities for reflecting on attitudes and values that may affect their decisions and choices in later years.

Therefore in Years 5 and 6 in a theme about ‘Changes’, the children learn about growing and changing, keeping clean, about relationships and the need to focus on friendship, and the building of self-esteem.
